Poptop may have beat this little guy through the finish gate, but Kings is the first Third Generation mold that I’ve finished to date (as the Druid Horse is still a WiP). Continue reading

Night Life

Make: Breyer

Mold: Saddlebred (G2)
Color: Black Chestnut
Gallery: Chestnut
Medium: Acrylics
Status: Painted 200? and Sold 200?

This little gal is one of my many Hackney Pony resculpts from the saddlebred mold. It was one of my favorite customizing options (after the draft crosses) because it made such a visual jump from the original model. Continue reading

Color: Flaxen Chestnut Sabino Overo
Gallery: Other
Medium: Acrylics
Status: Painted 200? and Sold 200?

While I’m not sure if this little guy’s coat pattern could actually appear in nature, it was a lot of fun to paint! He was order as a pair with Cirrus (another chestnut overo scratching foal) and the two were named after cloud formations. Continue reading

Color: Chestnut Tovero (Overo + Tobiano) ((+ Sabino?))
Gallery: Other
Medium: Acrylics
Status: Painted 200? and Sold

This little gal was a custom portrait horse, part of a set of three as I remember, and I think she turned out rather well. There isn’t much shading, but there also isn’t a lot of chestnut, so I think it was a happy compromise between pattern and color. (The photos are yellow-tinged, but I think the white was also just flat painted, without pinking.) Continue reading

This little gal came in a set with Splatterpaint and signals the point at which I gave up on oil painting. She’s a horse of a lot of firsts and I don’t think she came out too badly in retrospect. Continue reading

Black chestnut is such a wonderfully odd color and it’s a lot of fun to paint! As you can tell by the fact I have several of them… (This little gal came after Nachtkatze, but before Night Life). Continue reading

As you can tell from the photos (and the bonus head scan) this little gal was one of my earlier customs.

She one of my first attempts at altering the Saddlebred mold into something a little more interesting. I got in a lot of this mold in from the dealer (I ordered in quantities and she’d send me whatever wasn’t selling well) and I was trying to find new things to do with them. Continue reading

This little guy painted was part of a custom order (paired up with Cumulus, a flaxen chestnut sabino overo foal). The cloud motive fit nicely with the paint patterns… now I’m tempted to break out my old Earth Science textbook and do it again! Continue reading

Ah, the infamous ‘no really, pretend this is sky’ backdrop! (That’s how you can tell this is a very old custom.) I’m not sure why I decided that painting haphazzrdly was better than just putting down a solid coat of blue-gray, but I’m sure it made sense at the time. Continue reading

This little gal was a blast to paint and I loved the way she turned out! Unfortunately the paint-job didn’t past muster for the person who bought her (One of the few times a buyer thought less of a horse than I did). Continue reading

This little guy was either an Add-a-Foal or a I’m-Really-Sorry-For-The-Delay foal… not sure which.

I did a bunch of Apology Foals whenever custom orders ran long and from my recollection this was one of them. Foals only took me a couple of hours to paint and they made a better impression than offering a partial refund. Continue reading

This fella was a custom order based on a horse from a poster provided by the customer. He doesn’t have a lot of shading in the coat, simply because the horses in the photo didn’t and I was trying to match it as close as I could. Continue reading

Nachtkatze should translate into Night Cat, if Bablefish’s German is to be believed. Why I seem to have developed and addiction to naming models in languages I don’t speak is beyond me… but it sure is fun! Continue reading

This was a custom order which included straightening the neck, which I hadn’t done before on the mold.

It was an interesting move, since it required lifting and turning of the head and it didn’t quite even out. The problem was that in order to soften the neck enough to move the head, the head started getting mailable. Continue reading

This little guy was one of my old photo show string that I ended up selling when I started to move away from the hobby. I know he wasn’t first painted in 2005, but I did some touch-ups before selling him so I’m going to list him there anyways. Continue reading

The G2 Saddlebred had a lot going for it when it came to customizing. It was easy to turn it into an Arabian, a Morgan (which is what I was trying here), a Hackney, even a light draft cross (Friesians were a popular choice). I ended up doing a lot of these and this little gal had the dubious honor of being my first attempt. Continue reading

This hackney pony custom was a custom order (hence the fact that it is an ornament). I only did a few ornaments, mostly because the molds are a pain and a half to find balance points for… that and the high-tech eyebolt was hard to camouflage well. Continue reading

This fella was an experiment in using metallic colors with realistic coat patterns. It was an idea I had picked up from various model painting tips and tricks articles, but I think I might have overdone the mixture a tad. Still it’s an interesting effect and I might try it again sometime, although much more carefully. Continue reading

This little guy is part of a trio that I painted to round out the colors I had painted the Pony mold in. For the most part I tended to pick fantasy colors for this little guy, so this guy, Gumi Bear, and Nachtmaus were meant to bring a little reality back to the mold. Continue reading

I’ve always loved the bratty look of the G1 Arabian Mare, so much personality in such a little package!

She started out as an original finish bay, but I finished her off as a nice flaxen chestnut. This was back when I was still learning how to shade, so there isn’t as much contrast within the body color as I’d like, but she came out pretty well. Continue reading
