Medium: Acrylics, Liquitex Phthalocyanine Green
Status: Painted 2005? and Sold May 2005

This little guy was a lot of fun to paint and he’s one of the few horses that ended in a bidding war on eBay. Well, he did end up under $30 I think, so more of a bidding skirmish, but still. Continue reading

Color: Black and Orange Tobiano
Gallery: Tobiano
Medium: Acrylics
Status: Painted 200? and Sold 200?

I rarely do holiday themed horses, since by the time I finish them the holiday is over, so this little guy is a rare exception to the norm. I was tempted to give him Halloween themed cat tracks, but the basic orange and black looked too nice to fiddle with. Continue reading

Smokey's Shadow

Scale: Stablemate
Mold: Quarter Horse (G2)
Color: Dark Bay
Gallery: Bay
Medium: Acrylics
Status: Painted 200? and Sold 200?

I’m pretty fond of the way this little guy came out. He’s a simple dark bay with just the slightest bit of a resculpt to make him stand out from the crowd (the flipped tail). He was named in homage of titular horse from Smoky the Cow Horse by Will James. Continue reading

Color: Buckskin
Gallery: Dilutes
Medium: Acrylics and Pastels
Painted/Status: Mid 200? and Sold 200?

This little guy was gone towards the end of my customizing run, as you can tell by the background and head shot. I’d started working heavily with the pastels at this point, both Golden and Round Tuit were attempts at a pastels over a acrylic basecoat. Continue reading

Medium: Liquitex Burnt Umber, Acrylics and Pastels
Status: Painted 2005 and Sold May 2005

I very rarely paint plain black horses, outside of custom orders, so this was my stab at getting the color in hand. I was trying my best to stay away from the dreaded ‘flat black’ color, since it’s not very realistic. Thus I read up as much as I could from other customizers before I started mixing the paint. Gallery: Fantasy Appaloosa
Medium: Acrylics

Why I didn’t just call him Strawberry Glaze, I have no idea. Fragaria is the genus name for strawberries, so I’m assuming I was feeling overly literate when I named him. Continue reading

This little guy got one of those names I really wish I had saved for my own show string– and he was one of the horses I wish I’d kept as well! The color combination came out just the way I’d hoped it would in my head and appaloosa pattern was nice and crisp. Continue reading

This little guy started out life as a portrait horse, but turned into a wonderful example of why I offer 100% refunds on works-in-progress and why I make sure my custom order customers get in-process pictures on a regular basis. Continue reading

I got this little guy in a body lot with no idea who painted him to start with. He was a flat black and white paint job, but his pattern didn’t quite follow the frame overo rules. Continue reading

Told you I was going to do a horse in pastels when I got a round tuit! *grin*

Although, to be fair, only the base coat is in pastels. So he’s a mostly-pastel horse with acrylic markings and detailing. I’ll have to have another go at a full pastel model a bit later on. (I have some ideas for blocking out the white areas that I’m looking forward to trying!) Continue reading

This little guy was one of my first ever customs, back when I was using Primacolor pencils to add depth to the coloring instead of pastels. Sadly the photos are too washed out to pick up any of the detail, but he really was a wonderful little horse in person. Continue reading

Lassie is one of my older customs (possibly 199? instead of 200?) and the second in my series of dog coat patterns (the first was Dog Daze a Doberman pattern on the old Swaps mold). She was paired up with a foal with similar coloring called Payson’s Lad when she went to eBay. Continue reading
