Sudden Digression

Make: Breyer
Scale: Stablemate
Mold: Thoroughbred (G2)
Color: Yellow Chestnut Going Grey (Dappled Yellow Grey)
Gallery: Other
Medium: Acrylics
Status: Painted 2005? and Sold Oct 2005

This little gal is one of my favorites (in name and in color) and one of the horses I really wish I hadn’t sold. In theory I could paint her again, but I’m oddly reluctant to try. Continue reading

Mulligans Wild

Make: Breyer
Scale: Stablemate
Mold: Thoroughbred (G2)
Color: Dark Bay
Gallery: Realistic Bay
Medium: Acrylics
Status: Painted 200? and Sold 200?

Mulligan was painted to help round out the thoroughbred gallery and is a nice basic dark bay without any white markings. He’s been very minorly resculpted to add male bits and forelock, or (more accurately) a male bump and a forelock. Equine sex changes are a little more complicated that I had anticipated. Mold: Thoroughbred (G2)
Color: Bay Going Gray
Gallery: Dilutes
Medium: Acrylics and Prismacolor Pencils
Status: Painted 2003 and Sold March 2003

This little gal started out life as a dappled grey custom painted by an unknown artist. I got her in a body box from eBay and was planning on repainting her—then she was damaged in the move from Iowa to Virginia. Continue reading

Make: Breyer
Scale: Stablemate
Mold: Thoroughbred (G2)
Color: Rose Chestnut
Gallery: Solid Colors
Medium: Liquitex Venetian Rose, Acrylics
Status: Painted 200? and Sold 200?

Rose is painted in Venetian Rose only, with the dark points in the ‘from the tube; color and the light points from a mixture with white gesso. Even though there isn’t as much contrast to the shading as you’d find in a real chestnut, I love the variations I was able to pull out of the rose. Continue reading

Light the Sky

Make: Breyer
Scale: Stablemate
Mold: Thoroughbred (G2)
Color: Red Bay Frame Overo
Medium: Acrylics
Status: Painted 200? and Sold 200?

This little gal was painted in a run of rainbow thoroughbreds and was my ‘red’ model. She’s an older horse, as you can tell by the fuzzy nature of the photos and lacks a lot of the shading of the newer customs. Continue reading

Outta tha Blue

Make: Breyer
Scale: Stablemate
Mold: Thoroughbred (G2)
Color: Blue-bay Frame Overo
Medium: Acrylics

Zoom! Swish! Kapow! … Well, okay, maybe not Kapow.

But don’t blink because this little gal is moving at the speed of lightning, and she blends into the sky like no earthly equine could dream of. Watch her fly and pity the Pegasus for needing wings. Continue reading

Angel's Kiss

Make: Breyer
Scale: Stablemate
Mold: Thoroughbred (G2)
Color: Buckskin Tobiano
Gallery: Tobiano
Medium: Acrylics
Painted/Sold: Painted and Sold February 2004

This little gal was painted in a pair with Pure Malarkey. The custom order was for a dappled smutty buckskin tobiano and I wasn’t sure how well I’d pull it off so I painted one one smutty and one plain.

I personally liked Malarkey more, but in the end Angel went home with the customer and Malarkey cantered off to eBay. Continue reading

Make: Breyer

Mold: Thoroughbred (G2)
Color: Splatterpaint Blue, Green, Purple
Medium: Liquitex Phthalocyanine Green, Liquitex Phthalocyanine Blue, Liquitex Dioxazine Purple

This little guy was the eventual evolution of the splatterpaint technique I hashed out for the faux-decorator style of Florentine Flip. I did use the same technique for realistic roaning, but there’s nothing like staying true to your fantasy roots! Continue reading

Color: Blue No-spot Blanket Sabino Appaloosa
Gallery: Fantasy Appaloosa
Medium: Acrylics
Status: Painted 200? and Sold 200?

This little gal was meant to be a leopard appaloosa when I started painting her, but ended up as a extended blanket no-spot with some sabino flavoring. Sort of a ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ pattern, even for it’s simplicity. Continue reading

Medium: Acrylics and Pastels

This little gal was one of my few repaints– she didn’t sell with her original teal and green coat (see last photo) and after a few relistings on eBay I decided to give her a makeover. Continue reading

Color: Bay Splash Overo
Gallery: Overo
Medium: Acrylics
Status: Painted 200? and Sold 200?

Sakes Alive was my first attempt at adding mapping to a pinto pattern. It didn’t come out quite as well as I had hoped, but this was still pretty early in my learning curve, so it’s not horrible for a first try. Continue reading

Medium: Acrylics
Status: Painted 200? and Sold 200?

Ah, the infamous ‘no really, pretend this is sky’ backdrop! (That’s how you can tell this is a very old custom.) I’m not sure why I decided that painting haphazzrdly was better than just putting down a solid coat of blue-gray, but I’m sure it made sense at the time. Continue reading

Medium: Acrylics
Status: Painted 200? and Sold 200?

This little gal was a blast to paint and I loved the way she turned out! Unfortunately the paint-job didn’t past muster for the person who bought her (One of the few times a buyer thought less of a horse than I did). Continue reading

Gallery: Overo
Medium: Acrylics and Colored Pencils
Status: Painted in 200? and Sold 200?

This little gal was one of my earlier customs, painted one bored summer afternoon while watching kids playing in the apartment complex’s pool. She was sold as a pair on eBay with the splash overo foal Slip ‘n Slide, since I was feeling theme-ish that week. Continue reading

This was the custom order in which I learned that yellow hates green with a burning passion—or at least the Liquitex yellow hated the Liquitex light green that I had at the time. You’ll notice on my other rainbow horses, the yellow is off in a corner by itself. Continue reading

I apparently have an inability to take good photos of models with a lot of white on them. This was an earlier horse, as you can tell by the fabric backdrop and the slight blurriness (and the carpet! doh). Still, the camera was was a digital, you’d think I would have taken more photos and learned to fix the over-saturation. *sighs*

Is this a realistic horse color? Probably not. Was it really really fun to paint anyway? YES!

This little gal was one of a pair (Angel’s Kiss is the other) of buckskin tobianos that I painted for a custom order. This was my first attempt at a smutty buckskin… and it’s not an easy color to pull off with acrylics! Continue reading
