Deals with the joys of hammering together a Wordpress based website. From coding to traffic management, I’ll touch on a little bit of everything here.

Autoposting Fail: I Can Haz It

Failboat

Failboat

I wasn’t aware I had dropped off the face of the earth until I started moving things around for this week’s posts. (I use the plug-in WordPress Editorial Calendar to manage my posts. It’s a great way to make sure I’ve filled in the all the gaps!)

In order to keep the calendar organized, I move all draft posts a year into the future. This keeps me from misposting if I hit the wrong button and makes for easy sorting. Once posts are finalized, I fix the dates when I schedule them.

This time I fixed the month and day… and forgot to fix the year. Continue reading

Predictably Unpredictable

Keys to the Kingdom

Blogging consistently has never been an easy goal for me, but this year I’ve managed post to the MegaBlog every day. The downside to this is that the model horse ‘filler’ posts have taken over some weeks. While the horse to non-horse posting ratio has improved, it’s nowhere near where I was hoping it would be five months in.

Things are getting better, but apparently I need to work a little bit harder at failing upwards. Continue reading

Test of LiveJournal Crossposting Plugin

LiveJournal

Days of Yore

This is a test of the LiveJournal crossposting plugin (Livejournal Crossposter Remix 2.3). I’ve hit a few interesting errors so far, most of which seem to be due to me installing the Russian version of the plug-in first (doh).

Hopefully I can get this working, would be nice to visit my old haunts a little more regularly…

And who knows, maybe my fanfic muses will come back to play!

Function List for Core.php : Mystique WordPress Theme version 2.4.2

In my continual quest to muck about in the PHP coding for this theme, I have run into the frustrating problem of having to figure out which functions are hidden where. Thus I am posting a few index pages so I can use the search function on this blog as a cheat sheet.

As I write posts translating the various functions I’ll link them from the indexes.

I know Mystique is continually updated and expanded, so some of these will apply only to version 2.4.2. Please check your code before changing anything! Continue reading

Google Analytics

What do May Flowers bring? … Pilgrims!

Now that my urge to tell bad jokes is out of the way, let’s take a look at what’s changed in this month’s traffic patterns (comparing March 1-30 to April 1-30). Not that I have amazing traffic, but it’s always good to see what people are finding the blog and what topics they seem to gravitate too.

Have I mentioned that I am slightly addicted to Google Analytics? Continue reading

What does mystique_logo() Do?

A'Coding We Will Go

A'Coding We Will Go!

I’ve been trying to sort out the answer to a question asked on Hacking the Tagline about backgrounds and headers, so I’m pulling apart mystique_logo() from header.php to see what makes it tick. This is a step-by-step overview of what each line does and where the functions it uses are located.

Although I don’t have the newest version of the theme, hopefully this will help others who are trying to tweak mystique_logo() — which contains the blog title or the selected title image.

So let’s pop open Appearance -> Editor and read on… Continue reading

Unlocking the Archives (or: When Old Content is New Again)

Days of Yore

Days of Yore

Reformatting the past is a pain in the bleepidty.

Believe it or not, I’m still sorting through the last 2000+ post LiveJournal import (207 left to go!). I’ve done the easy bit, deleting the memes and fan fiction and pointless posts, now I’m slogging my way through changing the tags and the categories and the formatting… and making sure there aren’t any duplicates from Unquiet Bones. Hacking the Mystique Theme to Use Icons for Header Menu Choices

Fie Menubars, Fie!

Fie Menubars, Fie!

The base for this code modification is Mystique WordPress Theme created by Digital Nature version 2.4.2.

Always make a copy of the file before you start editing so that you can replace it if something goes wrong!

Amusingly, one of the things that drew me towards using Mystique in the first place was the navigation bar. It offered the best look and versatility of the various themes I tried out, but in the end I ripped it out to put in category icons instead. Continue reading

Hacking the Mystique Theme to Change the Header Tagline

Changing Ye Taglines

Changing Ye Taglines

The base for this code modification is Mystique WordPress Theme created by Digital Nature version 2.4.2.

One of the first things I did when I started mucking around with the theme was to change the header so that a different tagline displayed depending on what category you were in. (A holdover from the days when I had six different blogs.)

Since I’m not using the category description, the following shows how to manually set the various taglines AND how to use category_description if you’d rather.

Ready to rumble? Then pop open Appearance -> Editor and read on… Continue reading

Herding Cats and Sorting Sand

Things to Come (and Hulu)

Things to Come (+Hulu)

Setting up a posting schedule has always been a bit of a pain, even before the blogs were combined. As you can tell by the multitude of model horse posts, I’ve been having to resort to filler in order to keep up with my ‘post a day’ goal.

Now that the front page only shows the most recent post from each category, the model horse invasion isn’t as obvious… but the fact that I haven’t posted recently in some of the categories is.

Cross-Contamination (or: Pass Me the Style Section)

Blog Cascade

Blog Cascade

I’m torn between balancing the cohesiveness of having all of my blogs on one site with the desire to have each subblog have a unique visual appearance. I’ve already hacked Mystique to pull up the corresponding tagline and default icon for each category, but I haven’t gone much farther than that.

Now I’m looking at the sidebar and wondering if it’s worth it to have that change as well.

How to Hack the Mystique Theme to add Default Category Thumbnails

A'Coding We Will Go

A'Coding We Will Go!

The current base for my website it the Mystique WordPress Theme created by Digital Nature. As you can tell, I’ve been slowly but surely hacking the code apart into something a little more to my liking.

While beating this last bit of code into place (using default category thumbnails) I figured it might be nice to document what I’m doing. Part of this is so that other people can make the same tweaks and part of it is just so I’ll remember what the heck I did!

Comment Spam (or: I’m Not That Awesome, Really)

Comment Spam

Spamspamspam

I had the website set to moderate all comments, but after reading a few other blogs that highly objected to the practice– I turned it off.

And then immediately turned it on again for anything with one or more links in the comment.

Even after filtering out all the posts with links, the posts mentioning liveinternet.ru, article, or adultadsusa.com… I’m still getting a LOT of spam. There are apparently a lot of people (or bots) out there with nothing better to do than try and get their comments on random blogs so they get backlinks.

Procrastination Station

Much like Conjunction Junction (video), only without the singing. Or the grammar lessons.

… Although I could probably come up with a theme song if I tried hard enough. *hums*

The Shame

The Shame

But no, today’s post is about my lack of posting– or rather: my lack of finishing posts. I am easily distracted and thus have a habit of starting posts, getting a few sentences in and then alt-tab’ing out and getting lost on a wild tangent. It’s a habit I hadn’t spent a lot of time worrying about until I sat down this morning to plan out a posting schedule for next week.

I have 35 drafts sitting in the Posts folder already and just came back from a rather productive stint at Panera’s where I came up with another sixty-four topics. Add to that the fact I’ve been collecting post ideas in a small notebook since early March and you have a rather impressive snowball of Things To Write About(tm).

Most of which, the savvy reader will have sussed, I have not actually ever written about.

Transformation Complete!

Blog Cascade

Picture Vaugely Related

I have more or less sorted out the blogs into the correct categories, although I wished I’d taken the time to rename the duplications before I did the imports. (The Fantasy category in Unquiet Bones overlapped with Custom-Models.com and I’m still not sure everyone is in the right place.) Good things to know for next time, I suppose.

Amusingly most of the headaches have come from the fact that Unquiet Bones was an import of multiple LiveJournal accounts and there are a lot of things untagged from that consolidation. Most annoying of which are the writing posts from Dogs of the Never Never, since there are roughly 85 of them I still need to tag. Still out of 455 posts, I suppose it isn’t too bad that less than a forth of them need work.

Otherwise I’m just working my way slowly back through the pages making sure everything is in the right category and has the right formatting. Since the WordPress directories were in different places on the various blogs, the domain forwarding isn’t pitch perfect. Thankfully my addiction to putting pictures in blog posts is a recent failing, so there aren’t as many that need relinking.

Now I just need to work on getting more posts into the pipeline… *wanders off to find good blog topics*

All Together Now (or: From Many, One.)

Blog Cascade

Blog Cascade

My husband made a very good point earlier today that has had me breaking out the note-cards and playing around with possibilities. He mentioned that he thought it would make more sense if I just combined everything into one blog instead of splitting things out into separate blogs.

Having one blog would mean less logging in and out of the various WordPress Dashboards. Less password and username forgetfulness. Less fiddling with the nine thousand email addresses. Less addon and theme updates to install. Less backups to store. Less tracking tools to manage. Basically, less headaches in general.

If You Build It… They Will Bounce

The real joy of tools like Google Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics is that you can find out just how much of the internet looks at your webpages for 10 seconds or less. In my case, it’s all of it.

Which is to be expected for two basically brand new blogs (even if the model horse website has been around for a bit), but my goal is to improve those numbers by the end of this month. I’m not setting and hard goals for percentage improvement yet, I’m just looking to see if anything I can do will bring those numbers up.

Varety is the Spice of Life! (and Blogs)

Now that things have settled slightly, it’s time to start being a bit more proactive about posting. As much fun as it is to be All Model Horses, All The Time!… that wasn’t quite the plan.

I’ll be sitting down this weekend and roughing out draft posts for every August weekday. I’m hoping to get at least two weeks worth of posts into the queue by Tuesday, and then increase that lead as we move forward. This means you’ll be seeing fewer posts on the blogs that were posting daily (or almost daily), but it should be a most consistent showing overall.

Once I have a three month queue set up for the weekly postings, I’ll go back and add a second day to each of the blogs… hopefully at some point I’ll be posting 3-5 times a week on all of the blogs. I’m still crossing my fingers on that one, but we’ll see…

For now the draft schedule is:

Monday – Custom-Models.com
Tuesday - Unquiet Bones
Wednesday - Everyday Dragons
Thursday – Perish Twice
Friday – View From the Molehill

(Weekends are currently reserved for post writing and Goofing Off™!)

Multi-blog posting (or RSSing my life)

Hello world!

Alright, computer jokes aside this is the first official post to the new and improved Martha.net website. This has been my default home sweet home on the web since 1998 and I’ve been playing around with this domain for a while trying to figure out it’s purpose in life.

This used to be my one-stop shop for all things Martha-related, but over the years as my hobbies have migrated to their own websites it has turned into nothing more than a links page… and an outdated links page at that. There’s nothing more depressing than Googling oneself prior to job-hunting and being unimpressed.

So this is something new– a links page that’s more of an RSS feed of everything going on in my life. It’s also an inspiration for me to get in the habit of posting regularly to the various other websites I run. Won’t be an overnight success, but I aim to stick with it this time until it’s solid. I’m hoping to hammer out an official posting schedule by the end of the month, but we’ll see how it rolls.

Welcome to the chaos!
