Dual-boxing Priests : Levels 19 to 22

Playing With Fire

Playing With Fire

Now that I’m well out of the starter zones the time between new abilities is starting to drag out. Since I’m not changing things as much, I decided to go with my gut reaction from last post and start lumping more levels together.

While I was tempted to hold to my initial concept of doing every quest in a zone before moving on, I’ve found that I’m outleveling the content too quickly. I’m tired of doing green quests so I’m going to start pushing the envelope and see how good I really am at this.

My guess is ‘not so much’, but we’ll see.

…and YAY For Mounts! Continue reading

Dual-boxing Priests : Levels 17 to 18

Not a whole lot changes in these levels (just so you’re forewarned). In fact nothing much changes until level 28 when I get to pick up Devouring Plague, so I may end up lumping more levels together going forward. *pokes posts thoughtfully*

That’s the one bit that doesn’t change, no matter how many characters I’m playing– the grinding feeling kicks in around level 20 and never really leaves again.

All these 50% drop rates aren’t helping matters any. *mutter* Continue reading

Not Working As Intended

Not Working As Intended

I’ve actually gotten quite a bit of questing done on Illysu and Illysa since last post (although the Tauren mask won’t go away), but I’m trying to keep things to two levels a post for sanity’s sake.

I’m hoping to move to an every other week posting with these two, but time shall tell. Resting XP is the best XP! *solemn nod* Continue reading

Purple DoomChicken Redux (or: One-Button Hunters)

Doom Chickens Redux

Doom Chickens Redux

I met a few local WoW players during the recent NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) event in November and thus I now have a brand new pair of alts over on Dragonmaw. It’s my first time on a PVP server, but I have yet to see any opposing faction members, so it’s been pretty low stress so far.

The goal is to level up to 15 by this weekend so we can do guild-only dungeon runs, which should be a blast! But this does make things a little more complicated than just running about by myself, thus I’ve got a few macro tweaks to share. Continue reading

Dual-boxing Priests : Levels 13 to 14

Not My Best Idea

Not My Best Idea Ever

And lo, the Perishing part of Perish Twice is now in full effect again. *sighs*

Ah well, I suppose my carefree days of gallivanting around and attacking everything that moves had to come to an end at some point. Nothing like wading into a fight with something eight levels higher to snap me out of my facerolling rut.

Sadly, I tried twice more before I gave up—just to see if it was possible to even hit the #@$! thing. (Note: it was not.) Continue reading

Dual-boxing Priests : Levels 11 to 12

I’m a bit further up the treadmill learning curve and I’ve found I can get one to two levels done in a play session now, which lasts until I hit the end of my rested XP bar. With luck this should mean at least one leveling post a week if I can get my blogging speed up to match. (I expect this will change as I grind upwards, but it will be interesting to see how fast progression slows.)

Have I mentioned I’m not looking forward to Outlands? *sigh*

Things are getting easier as I go, thanks in part to the nice range of abilities these two now have. I had definitely underestimated the survivability of the pair when I first started them—even compared to the druids, dual-priests definitely feel over-powered at times. Continue reading

Dual-boxing Priests : Levels 9 and 10

Bloodelves = Too Sexy For This Top

Evil, I Can Haz

Been a bit since I worked on these guys, most of the time has been spent fiddling with the UI and the addons instead of actually questing (ah the joys of treadmill gaming!). Those posts are still in the works, but I figured I’d better get content up that isn’t based on a Blog Azeroth Shared Topic for a change.

Thus Illysu and Illysa are back on the warpath and it’s time to burn up some of that yummy blue rested XP! Plus I’ll get a few more miles under my belt and hopefully hammer out the last of the bumpy treadmill learning curve.

I had no idea I spent so much time looking at my keys when I play… Doh. Continue reading

Chess vs. Slapjack (a leveling conundrum)

Mountain Views

I’ve been leveling the Priests (Illysu and Illysa) at a glacial pace recently and it occurred to me whilst writing up the next leveling post that I may be overthinking things.

As was touched on in the last Blog Azeroth Shared Topic, leveling has gotten just a tad easier lately.

Where Tad = Extremely and Lately = since Cataclysm.

Right now, I’m stopping every time I hit a new ability or spell in order to research it and then integrate it into my macros and keybindings. In contrast, when I’m leveling a normal alt, I just faceroll my way through the process, stopping only when I start having problems—and I’m wondering if I shouldn’t lean more in that direction with my pairs. Continue reading

Dual-boxing Priests : Levels 1 to 8

Alt-itis? Not me!

Alt-itis? Not me!

There are two brother suns in Kazimar Or in this case sister suns, since male Blood Elves look much too silly to stare at for long periods of time. (Take that you stupid ‘name is not available’ popup!)

In-between cleaning last holiday weekend I sat down and started up a new pair of alts. As much fun as the hunter-hunter and druid-druid pairs are, they require a lot more brainpower and I wanted something simple and fun.

And I am totally not addicted to starter leveling zones… nopenopenope. Continue reading

Two Cats, One Stick

Two Cats, One Stick

To be fair, it’s a stick with arms… and a level 60 stick at that.

I seem to be making a level a week at this point, so I figured now is a good time to sit down and make sure my new Cat-Cat setup is working. Leveling only gets slower as things go on (am not looking forward to Outlands), better to hash it out now since I’ve gotten all the basic abilities.

The rotation I had hashed out on Dual-Spec, Dual-Loot isn’t working as well as I’d hoped, so it’ off to beat on the training dummy for a bit. (I’d beat on the mobs, but they hit back.)

I’ve got too many green quests in my queues and I’m looking to up the ante… but first I want to make sure that my newly spec’d kitties are up to the challenge. Continue reading

Swipe Bear, Swipe!

Dancin Bears

SWIPE IS BACK!

Thanks to the wonder that is Patch 4.1, I can finally put Swipe (Bear) back into my rotation!

Alas Swipe (Cat) and all it’s yummy double-damage is still stuck up out of my reach for the moment. I’m tempted to slip back into my main just to do some overpowered kitteh AoE. (purr)

But back to the bears!

There’s nothing more frustrating that trying to to tab-tank when you’re playing two toons. Building and maintaining threat to keep the mobs off Pattern was much harder than anticipated, even with the help of the faux-AoE Challenging Roar. Continue reading

I Hate Threat, Threat Hates Me

Aggro-Magnet-in-Training

Aggro-Magnet-in-Training

Recognition is a Bear Tank, or at least that’s what she’s meant to be… The only problem is I know almost nothing about tanking and even less about tanking with a bear.

Embarrassingly I have to admit that my use of her up to this point has mostly been to auto-attack and taunt everything that moves.

Not really an effective use of my time (or hers).

So now it’s time to break out the books, and the wiki, (and Big Bear Butt‘s archives) and start learning about what it is I’m trying to do! Continue reading

Looking Over Patch 4.1.0 (for Druid-Druid)

Patch Baby, Patch!

Patch Baby, Patch!

Ahh, the scent of a new Patch!

So lets see what changes lie in store for brave Pattern and Recognition… (and of course Ashella, my much neglected main). In theory the patch should hit sometimes soonish, but ‘soonish’ has all sorts of values with Blizz.

Forgive me for the old Patch picture, I’ll update it as soon as the new one drops!

Now onto the fun… Continue reading

Druid-Druid : Level 32

Scenic Mountain Views

Scenic Mountain Views

After the measly one new ability from Level 30, you’d think Level 32 would offer up something a little more substantial. But alas, although we have twice as many new abilities, they aren’t as useful as I would have hoped.

I suppose I shouldn’t complain too much, level 34 doesn’t have any new abilities at all… *sigh*

To be fair, the only ability that I really miss right now is Swipe and I get that in another three levels. If I put my nose/beak to the grindstone that’s within easy reach.

Well, I do miss Flight Form as well, but considering how much of a pain it’s been to learn how to swim without breaking follow… I’m not looking forward to it. Continue reading

Dual-Spec, Dual-Loot

So Feral We All

So Feral We All

Picking up a dual-spec for Pattern and Recognition has been in my Grand Plan for a while. While I think the Bear/Boomchicken strategy will serve me well for soloing dungeons, I’ve been planning on picking up a dual-Cat pair for ease of leveling (solo mobs don’t last more than a few seconds).

I wasn’t paying attention and didn’t realize that the level for dual-spec had been dropped from 40 to 30. (doh!) So when I went to the trainer for level 33, I jumped on the option. Continue reading

Druid Shapechanging Macros

Kitties on the Prowl

Kitties on the Prowl

The best thing about druids is their ability to instantly change forms to match the situation. While I’m a bit more confined with my dual-boxing pair, taking full advantage of this isn’t something I’m willing to give up.

When it comes to dual-boxing druids, keeping everyone in the right form can be a bit crazy. I can’t depend on just the default buttons to keep everything in order– especially since Pattern works with both Resto and Balance spells. (The amazing vanishing Boomchicken is a frustrating thing!)

So this is run down on the different forms/stances and the best way to macro them into compliance… Continue reading

Choosing Professions for Dual-Boxing

Professions

Professions, yay?

The Shared Topic for March 14-20 over on Blog Azeroth is “Favorite Profession,” which got me thinking about what I should be doing with my pairs.

I don’t really have a ‘favorite’ profession, since the only ones I’ve put time into on my main are Tailoring and Enchanting. Other than my pure and undying hatred for Fishing, the rest are pretty much unknowns.

In theory you could skip professions while you are leveling, and I’ve done that to some extent on a few of my pairs. At low levels the professions aren’t as useful as they could be and the time and effort required to keep them at useful levels while doing Refer-a-Friend is insane.

Mashing Different Buttons

Of Bears and Boomchickens

Of Bears and Boomchickens

I’ve been away from WoW for a while, real life reared it’s ugly head and took priority– which is the reality for all casual gamers, I suppose.

But now that things are a little more settled, I’ve had a chance to start moving some of my ideas from paper to the screen. The main one being swapping to using separate keybinds for each toon as opposed to linking two actions to one keypress.

I’ve been playing around with fighting styles for Pattern (Balance) and Recognition (Feral Tank), but I haven’t found good combination for linked spells/abilities.

One Patch Forward, Two Bears Back!

New UI Ideas

New UI Ideas

I swear, I have been trying to get a new post out for the old dual-boxing druid pair of Pattern and Recognition, but Blizz has been having a field day with Druids! Every time I think I have a post ready to go (I’ve redone them as Bear and BoomTree) they go back and muck about with the talents/skills again.

There is something just unsettling to see things reset every other login. *shudder*

That said, the relevant changes from Patch 4.0.6 aren’t as bad as could be feared. There are some nerfs to feral damage, but at the lower levels they aren’t going to be as obvious as they will on my main. It’s sort of rare for me too look forward to patches, but I can’t wait till some of this goes live!

Thus, the three things that have caused some hasty shuffling of spells and strats for me are:

Worgen Starting Area = Dual-boxing Hell

Stonetooth

Dog is 4 Fite!

The Cataclysm launch has come and gone and it’s time I got some of my reactions out of my head and down on paper.

Since the only things exclusive to the Cataclysm expansion are levels 81-85 and the two new races, I decided to hold off for a bit before buying the upgrade for my second account. Thanks to Blizzard’s temporary price slashing, my second account is now all the way up to Wrath ($15 for two expansions = WIN) and that’s still too many levels between my pairs and 80 to plunk down another $40.

But being the addict that I am, I wanted to know what I was missing out on!

I ran both a Goblin and a Worgen through the starting areas so I could see the new content and get a feel for how hard it would be to dual-box them. While the Goblin area did have some phasing, it was nowhere near the nightmare that the Worgen starting area turned out to be.

Perish Twice

Dual-boxing Hunters : Levels 1 to 5

Now that the UI/Addons and the basic macros have been setup, it’s time to work on some questing!

Tiny Purple Doom Chickens

Tiny Purple Doom Chickens

I’m still trying to get over how small the starter pets are. I’m used to things shrinking when I tame them, but these guys are tiny. Plus the visual oddity of sending what amount to Plainstrider Hatchlings against adults for your very first quest is rather amusing.

Thus I have lovingly named them Pipsqueek and AnkleBiter (yes, I am aware Pipsqueak is spelled wrong) and am looking forward to a leveling in a more Hunter-esque fashion!

Perish Twice

Dual-boxing Hunters : Starting Macros

Hither and Yon

Hither and Yon

Now that the UI is setup, it’s time to get the macros in place!

Since I only play two toons instead of three or more, I don’t use many of the automation macros. With Yon’s screen set at 800 x 600, I can read and interact with the various pop-ups without issues. Thus my initial setup is much simpler than most Multiboxers’.

Plus the starter pets, while technically pets, apparently aren’t controllable and thus there is no point in Macro’ing commands. (Wish I’d know that before I wasted fifteen minutes trying to figure out why /petattack wasn’t working!)

Dual-boxing Hunters : Starting Addon and UI Configuration

Default UI

Default UI

The very first thing I do when setting up a new dual-boxing pair is to make sure all the graphic settings on the follower (in this case Yon) are turned to the lowest settings. I can normally bump it up a bit, depending on how bad the lag is (much lower now that we’ve switched from Cox to Fios!) but it’s always best to start low.

I also turn off every optional setting I can to reduce screen clutter. No nameplates, no names, it’s as user un-friendly as can be, but I’m not going to be using her screen much.

Patch 4.0.1 – A Brave New World

Patch Baby Patch!

Patch Baby Patch!

Alright, so compared to the coming Cataclysm it’s not that big a change, but there are some serious updates to the basic mechanics for most classes — which is why I’ve put off posting until I had a chance to sit down and sort things out.

Thankfully I was able to download the patch on my solo play installation of WoW and then copy the patch files over to my leader and follower installations.

The temporary loss of X-Perl UnitFrames means I’ll have to go back to using the default UI for the party screens, but hopefully that will be temporary. Still, there were a lot of addon updates (WoWInterface AddOn Survival Guide (Patch 4.0.1)), so I’m glad I waited the few extra days before trying to dual-box again.

Nothing like a patch to break everything! :P Continue reading

Hunter & Hunter Leveling – Level 16

Picture Slightly Related

Picture Slightly Related

Abilities | Glyphs

This is the bit where I serve as a Bad Example.

After the flurry of activity that was Level 15, I actually didn’t bother to train when I hit 16 and instead waited until I hit 18. Which was a mistake, because I passed over Aspect of the Cheetah, which would have cut back on my cursing about the lack of mounts. (The Barrens does that to people…)

Thus this post is more of a reference for what I should have done at this point.

Hunter Talents : Levels 15-19

Beast Mastery Tier 2

Tier 2 Talents

The list of available talents in this post is a little different than the one in Levels 10-14. Since I’m putting all of my points into Beast Mastery for now, I’m not including those talents I can’t reach on the other trees (and it seems a little silly to relist their Tier 1 talents.)

I still haven’t found any good guides for leveling hunters, so if anyone would like to drop me a link, I’d appreciate it. Also, if anyone would like to make a case in the comments for taking a different leveling path, I’m open to that as well. Remember, I’m still learning here!

And as a helpful hint to those of you who haven’t stumbled across it yet– the Talent Calculator over at Wowhead is a great little tool!

Hunter Talents : Levels 10-14

Beast Mastery Talents

Pre-Research Talents

Until Cataclysm comes and changes life as we know it, listed below are the talents available to hunters for levels 10 through 14. Once you hit level 15 the next tier of talents are unlocked (assuming you have put all five points into one talent tree). I’d recommend picking one tree and sticking to it, at least until you get a better feel for which one best fits the way you play.

Beast Mastery is the default leveling spec for soloing hunters, when you are dual-boxing you have the luxury of being able to mix and match. I’m sticking to cookie cutter BM talent builds for now, but I may look into broadening my range when I hit the ability to dual-spec (Dual Talent Specialization) at 40. Comments here are thusly focused on talent usefulness when looking through the BM spec, but I may update them if I go back and try leveling a different way.

Since it only costs 1 gold to change things around, I have a feeling I’ll be playing with the build a lot as I go along.

Hunter – Hunter Leveling – Level 24

(Sorry for skipping ahead, I got caught up in questing and I made it to 24 before I finished the earlier posts.)

At level 24 we pick up another rank in Raptor Strike (boo) and two new abilities.

Beast Lore

Beast Lore

Beast Lore

“Gather information about the target beast. The tooltip will display damage, health, armor, any special resistances, and diet. In addition, Beast Lore will reveal whether or not the creature is tameable and what abilities the tamed creature has.”

Beast Lore Screenshot

Beast Lore Screenshot

When you cast this on a beast (which includes beast bosses, other hunters’ pets, Shamans in wolf form, and druids in cat/bear/travel form) it will show you information about the critter when you then mouse over it. It gives hunter’s a way to see what abilities pets had before they were tamed–which is sort of useless, assuming you’ve used Petopia to pick out your pet ahead of time.

I’m assuming this was much more useful back in the day when the different skins on the pets meant something. Depending on the beast, it might have unqiue talents, higher stats, or other such goodness. Now a pig is a pig is a tenacity pet– regardless of what it was before you tamed it.

Track Hidden

Track Hidden

Track Hidden

“Greatly increases stealth detection and shows hidden units within detection range on the minimap. Only one form of tracking can be active at a time.”

While it’s nice to turn this on when the stealthed felines are making your life miserable in the Thousand Needles, it’s not that useful a skill outside of PvP. You won’t see anything pop up on the minimap before it’s right on top of you, since the ability doesn’t up your stealth detection to omnipotence… just a few more feet and a few levels higher. Outside of those specific times when you have to avoid the Annoying Invisible Critters, it’s not that useful.

Talent Point

This level’s talent point is going into Unleashed Fury again. I’m still not sold on putting two points into Pathfinding, even if I am doing a lot of running  around. Next level we’ll get to the next tier (yay!)

So, all in all, level 24 is sort of a wash. Ah well, still recovering from the insanity that was level 20!
