Dual-boxing Hunters : Starting Addon and UI Configuration

Default UI

Default UI

The very first thing I do when setting up a new dual-boxing pair is to make sure all the graphic settings on the follower (in this case Yon) are turned to the lowest settings. I can normally bump it up a bit, depending on how bad the lag is (much lower now that we’ve switched from Cox to Fios!) but it’s always best to start low.

I also turn off every optional setting I can to reduce screen clutter. No nameplates, no names, it’s as user un-friendly as can be, but I’m not going to be using her screen much.

No love, Bartender, no love.

I finally hit 15 today on my hunters (Day 2 post coming soon!) and headed into a random dungeon. The first couple of pulls went fine and then the keybinds for everything stopped working on my main toon.

Of course I didn’t notice this right off, since my follower was doing everything as if the world was all fine and dandy. I managed to figure out what was going on after a few minutes of confused keypressing and then clicking– but Ragefire Chasm is a very very short dungeon and I ended up passing on everything that dropped once I realized just how sucktastic I was being (although no one called me on it, thankfully). There’s nothing quite like topping the dps charts to start with and then five minutes later being beaten out by the healer… *sighs*

As soon as the dungeon was over I quit out on the main and logged back in… and got a Bartender error and none of the keybinds worked. Logged out, Unchecked Bartender, logged in– no problemo.

So I am now a very very grumpy monkey. I’ll see if I can grab the error again later (I ragequit for a few hours, it’s been that kind of day) and for now I’ll go back to using the default Blizzard bars.

Yay?

SexyMap : Leader

Addon Link: SexyMap

I’ve already got Stringtheory setup with this addon, so now it’s time to get Overdraft figured out. As you can see from the ‘before’ screenshot, I could actually probably just use the default map. It’s the right placement and approximately the right size… but I’ve become very fond of the square maps (I can see a little further) and the button hiding.

  • Lock minimap – This is the generic lock/unlock that everything movable tends to have. I turn it off so I can move it, then on later so it stays put.
  • Clamp to screen – off so that I can get it as close to the left side of the screen as possible.
  • Buttons - are all set to hide until I hover over the map. I’ve gone through and turned off all the buttons that I rarely use so that I can line them all up along the right-hand side of the map.
  • Borders - I’m using the Preset called Simple Square, for lo, it works and I am lazy.
  • Coordinates - On
  • Fader - is off, since I’ve found that I prefer to have the map on at all times.
  • HudMap - off
  • Ping - on
  • Zone Buttons – on

Which leaves me with a map more or less the same size in more or less the same place, but better.

Better in an almost purely aesthetic way, but since I’m planning on staring at these screens for countless hours… I figure it’s worth the tweak.

Power Auras Classic : Stringtheory

Power Auras Classic is an addon that lets you add visual cues to the game and can be configured thousands of ways. This is by far my favorite addon for any of my characters because it allows me to tweak how the game interacts with me.

Since Stringtheory will have a tiny tiny screen it make it vital that I can quickly tell what is going on in Mage-ville.

Health and Mana are the two big ones, so we’ll start with those…

Health has three effects, one at 70% one at 50% and one at 30%. The first is a static yellow warning aura, the next is an slowly flashing orange aura, and the third is a fast flashing bright red aura. The three stack on each other and should give me a good indication of when things are going badly. This is similar to what I use when I’m not dual-boxing, in this case it’s just a lot larger and there is flashing involved. When I only have one screen static images work just as well (and are less annoying).

Mana really only requires two warnings, one at 50% and one at 30%. These are less important than the health so I’ve gone with less immediate colors, but both of them will flash in order to catch my attention.

This is a screen I really don’t want to be seeing…

Now that I have my health and mana in easy to notice formats, it’s time to add a few more clues to let me know how Mage II is doing. Thankfully, at this level there really isn’t much to track. I only have two buffs I need to keep up and an aggro warning.

The buffs will be smaller than the mana warnings and directly over the character, since they will almost always be off. I actually cast buffs in tandem, so these are less important since I will have similar warnings setup on Overdraft. Neither one costs enough mana to worry about ‘wasting’ the cast to rebuff both of them at once. Still, flashing things are good for getting attention, so I’ll give them their own rotations.

The aggro warning, on the other hand, will be an enormous flashing red skull since there will be times when I manage to invoke the wrath of whatever mob thinks mages are the Bestest Snackfood Evar. Which is most of them, come to think of it.

All of this makes for an incredibly busy screen… but one I’m not going to see very often. Or at least not for very long. (re: Snackfood)

For now, this is all I am going to set up for Stringtheory. As we go along I may tweak these, or add others, but for now it should be enough to help me keep her alive.

Bartender4 : Stringtheory

Bartender4 is a bar modification addon that allows you to position, resize, and do just about anything actually, to the action bars. Since it has nine thousand settings, I’m only covering the changes from default settings.

  • Bars 1 through 3 – enabled and set to a 3×4 instead of straight lines. (Although at the low levels I may be able to get away with only two bars.) Scale is left to 1 right now, but once I get things hotkey’d properly I’ll most likely shrink bars 2 and 3 to nothingness.
  • Bars 4 through 10 – disabled
  • Micro Menu – is hidden since I can get to everything from hotkeys
  • Bag Bar – set to One Bag and moved over directly under the minimap. Scale is left at 1 since I want to be able to see it.

Which gives me something like this (I’ve filled in the empty bits just so you can see all three bars). I could probably compress things even more, but I already feel like the screen is naked as it is. It’s a big jump from the UI I use on my feral druid main (which has nine thousand extra bits of info floating around)

Now I just need to find a way to move the party headshots out of the way, since they will be overlapping things. *heads out to Curse to see what’s available* Ah, okay, looks like I’ll be installing MoveAnything as well.

Of course, now I need to start on the keybindings and on the macros… but I’m going to play with Power Auras next because I am all for the pretty colors at this point. (UI work in 800×600 makes my eyes cross!)

Prat 3.0 : Stringtheory

Prat 3.0 is an addon that allows you to customize the chat interface in WoW, something it desperately needs! There are other addons that function more like AIM, but I have yet to find one that doesn’t crash me back to the desktop. So, erm, suggestions anyone?

For Stringtheory’s little screen all I am using this addon to do is hide the chat window (as best I can). It’s a much more powerful tool, but you’ll need to check out Overdraft’s post to see what nifty tricks you can teach it.

So for this addon, I just uncheck everything, unlock the window and drag it to the top corner. You can actually hide the darned thing mostly off-screen, with just enough left to drag it back out if needed.

No screenshots with this one because I didn’t do anything (and I forgot to save before I started working on Bartender). *whistles innocently*

SexyMap : Follower

SexyMap is an addon that allows you to modify (and more importantly, move) the map that is normally in the upper right hand corner of the screen. I normally get my addons through Curse (hence the link), but to each their own.

You can get to the settings by right clicking on the minimap or through Options – Interface – Addons. From there things are pretty straightforward.

  • Lock minimap – off so I can move it, then on later so it stays put
  • Clamp to screen – off so that I can get it as close to the left side of the screen as possible.
  • Scale - 1.5 (I may turn this down later, but for now I want it big enough to notice the Gatherer icons)
  • AutoZoom – I’ll leave to the default for now.
  • Buttons - are all set to hide until I hover over the map. (Since I most likely won’t need to use them often.
  • Borders - I’m using the Preset called Simple Square, for lo, it works and I am lazy.
  • Coordinates - Are off here and will be on for Overdraft
  • Fader - is off, since I won’t be mousing over this map unless something goes wrong. (Mages are a squishy lot)
  • HudMap - is off, since it’s relies on me paying more attention to the screen than will be healthy.
  • Ping - off
  • Zone Buttons – off
  • Profiles - not really needed since the only toon that will be here is Stringtheory (or possibly another dual-boxnig alt, who will most likely have the same settings)

The Default UI : Stringtheory

Stringtheroy has a much smaller screen (800×600) so I figure I’ll start with her. In theory Overdraft will be easier to setup since she’ll be the closest to my other alts in terms of settings and layout.

So, time to start trimming some options!

Options – Video – Resolution

  • Resolution – set to 800×600 to match the resolution set up in Keyclone. While you can set the game resolution higher, I’ve found there is a lot less lag if you match things up.
  • Multisampling – Lowest setting. I’m not going to be looking at this screen much, so I’m killing off as much as I can.
  • Use UI Scale – I leave this off since I’ll most likely be using Bartender to shrink it down to barely usable anyway.
  • Hardware Cursor – Off, as I won’t be using the mouse in this window (at least in theory)
  • Reduce Input Lag – ON. Seriously, I don’t care if the framerate drops a little, I’d rather cut down on the time between key-press and mage-response however I can.

Options – Video – Effects

  • Video Quality: Low and all the effects turned off.

With my computer I could probably set things a bit higher that this, but for now I’m embracing the least WoW has to offer. Once I have the lag between the two more manageable, then I’ll worry about making things look pretty.

Options – Sound & Voice

  • Everything off.

Options – Interface – Controls

  • Auto Clear AFK – Is a must for those folks permanently on follow.
  • Block Incoming Trade Requests – When I need to move things over to Overdraft for sale, I’ll turn it back on. Hopefully this will cut down on the trade spams in Stormwind.
  • Auto Loot – For those times when I’m gathering or there are quest-y bits I need to be picking up

Options – Interface – Combat

  • Everything gets turned off in here other than the Auto Self Cast, since I can’t see a use for any of it (at least not yet).

Options – Interface – Display

  • Show Cloak/Show Helm – I’ll keep these for now, but if/when things start getting ugly they are going off…
  • Show Free Bag Space – I’m trying to make sure these guys are all maxed out on bags (yay for having a Tailor main!) so this should rarely be an issue.

Options – Interface – Objectives

  • Instant Quest Text - Why anyone wouldn’t have this on is beyond me… and since I’m using QuestHelper on Overdraft, there’s no need for any of the others.

Options – Interface – Social

  • I wish there was some way to turn the chat off all together, but I’m still working on that. For now these are all unchecked and I’ll set her to DND.

Options – Interface – ActionBars

  • Another section that I’m going to totally ignore in favor of addons. Woo!

Options – Interface – Names, Combat Text, and Status Text

  • Off, off, and more off! (They’d be too small to read)

Options – Interface – UnitFrames and Buffs and Debuffs

  • And a little more Off to go with the rest of the Off this little mage is embracing.

Options – Interface – Camera

  • Follow Terrain – this one is on, although I don’t know how useful it will be. I may end up turning them all off depending on how things go.
  • Water Collision – On
  • Smart Pivot – Off
  • Max Camera Distance – Low for now. I expect to keep the camera in close for Stringtheory so that there is less for that screen to render.
  • Auto Follow Speed – Medium
  • Camera Following Style – Only when moving

Options – Interface – Mouse

  • Nothing changes from the default settings.

Options – Interface – Features

  • There’s no point right now in using Equipment Manager or the Preview Talent Changes since I only have one set of gear and I am using the leveling builds so I know where my points are going.

Options – Interface – Help

  • All off, since I don’t want any interaction in this window if I can help it.

Options – Keybindings and Macros

  • Will be their own posts. Srsly.

The World’s Most Minimal UI…

The problem with dual-boxing is that for me, the screen goes from being 1920×1080 to being 1024×768 and 800×600. Which is TINY. At least on my monitor.

For a while I had it set to show Overdraft’s screen even larger and Stringtheory’s smaller, but I’ve found it’s a lot easier for me to deal with them when they are roughly the same size. Since I was a bit of a moron and gave each of them a gathering skill I have to keep and eye on both maps in search of goodies. (Not bright, I know, but I’m too lazy to fix it now.)

So my goal is to have as little as possible show up on either screen.

*gets out the toolset* Time to start trimming back on the addons! And the video settings, and the lag, and… you get the idea.

Addons for Both

  • Altoholic - This really should be a given considering I have a whole guild of alts.
  • Bartender4 - To help save as much space as possible
  • Gatherer - Yay for maps of herbs and stone!
  • Power Auras Classic – So it will be blindingly obvious how Stringtheory is doing without having to see the default UI
  • SexyMap - Huzzah for being able to move things!
  • Prat 3.0 – To make Barrens chat a little more bearable. (And to hide the chat window for Stringtheory)

Addons for Overdraft

  • Combuctor - On Overdraft but not on Stringtheory since I just pass to the main when I want to vendor things. (I may go back to using cargBags_Gnomed, but I’m waffling right now)
  • Informant - I only care what it’s worth/for if I’m selling it– since I am a packrat on steroids and never leave anything unlooted.
  • Auctioneer - See above
  • Omen - No point in seeing it twice, since I’ll be on the same target 90% of the time
  • Questhelper – For obvious reasons.
  • Recount - I use this to improve my own DPS, not to rag on other people.

Addons for Stringtheory

  • MoveAnything - To move the unitframes

Now that I’ve got the basics figured out it’s time to make it look pretty.

What Stringtheory's UI looked like before...

And this? This is Not Pretty.

To keep things simple, I’m going to break this down by addon in the next few posts. Which should make things easier to deal with when I’m searching later to figure out what the BLEEP I did to the poor thing.
