Writing To-Do List (aka Wattpad)

By | April 19, 2017

It’s a Camp NaNoWriMo month, but so far I haven’t gotten much writing done!

I was going to do a quick ‘state of the writing desk’ sum-up post to raise my spirits when it occurred to me that almost everything I’ve written since the last update had been posted to Wattpad.

I’ve been using Wattpad as a place to post MuseFic-centered writing, since I assume it’s the least likely to be stolen. Sure, there’s sometimes an actual story rough draft in there, but folks are (probably) too lazy to dig it out and repost it.

Only… I haven’t been posting those same stories here. Which is a tad worrisome, I don’t want to end up where I’m missing writing from the archives again. So there will be a little spam as the week goes by as I play catch-up (and hopefully write new words!).

Half-imagined Never Afters

Half-imagined Never Afters

It was quite lovely to take a month off after the chaos of NaNoWriMo, but my success in posting once a day with [Placeholder] has given me overly optimistic views going forward.

In fact I started out with the crazy goal of continuing to post daily, but since 2017 is my year of ‘stop over-committing to things you doof’, I decided that was a bit much. Right now I’m going to make a point to sit down every night with the intent to work on some writing… and see where it goes from there.

The main plans are thusly: Wattpad, 52 in 52, NaNoWriMos, Scribophile

De-Fandoming Hushed and White With Snow

By | June 8, 2016

LJ Hushed and White With Snow IconLJ Stargate IconI’m trying to get back into the habit of writing again, so time for another Random Roll! (I’m using the six-sided dice over at Random.org because I still have found my whilst unpacking.)

6. Fan Fiction (Filing off the serial numbers)
1. Hushed and White With Snow

And… whew. Of all the fan fiction on the list to end up with, this one will be the hardest to unravel because it depends on existing relationships between the characters and elements that are specific to the show.

The one saving grace is that it was also a drastic departure from the normal canon of the show and it is still a WiP, so is mostly outline. Should be a fun experiment to redo! 🙂

The Wolves We Are + Scrivener = WIN?

By | June 3, 2015

The Wolves We Are eBook Cover 300x400

I’ve been mucking about editing/revising/curing at the draft of The Wolves We Are for quite a while now. Finding the green folder with the current be-scribbled draft in it was actually a nice surprise while unpacking, but I really haven’t done anything other than flip through it in months (years?).

Then I got an email from NaNoWriMo the other day reminding me that my Winner’s Goodies from last November’s win are going to expire at the end of the month, so I figured I’d better get cracking.

The free book from CreateSpace is going to be a dump of all the story prompts, daily snippits, and flash fiction that I’ve done to date. (I’m calling it The Really Big Book Of Very Tiny Stories!) But then I decided I’d really like for final version of The Wolves We Are to be in it as well.

Which means I have to actually finish the thing… darnit.

So I picked up a free 30 days trial of Scrivener with the option to buy it at 50% off if it works. (Once again, yay for winner’s goodies!) Now all I have to do is get all my crazy doodling out of the green folder version and into the digital one.

And then probably print it right back out again… I’m still not 100% sure the idea of editing without colored markers is possible. *pokes draft*

But I might finally have a ‘finished’ version that I can put up as an Ebook, so keep your fingers crossed for me! 🙂

Building a Story To-Do List

Short Story Outlines

This year’s NaNoWriMo has turned into another series of short stories and that’s sent me digging back into the vaults to see which outlines are ripe for word counts. I didn’t plan for the first story to die out at 10k, or the second to round out a 5k, so I’m needing some serious story bones right now…

So far I have finished off

  • The Tear’s of Winter — New universe, 10kish
  • Werewolf Sick Days — Tales of the Drunken Unicorn, 5kish

Older Stuff I have I can work on

  • Last Requests — Nothing done on this one other than the really rough outline
  • Chewtoys — Plenty of room for prose expansion on ‘this is what happened’ sum-up bits
  • Silverwitch — very very rough idea of where it was going, so lots of room to run
  • The Ties That Bind — Lots to prose out still, but it might be better to finish Silverwitch instead of working on the sequel
  • Inheritance — Still needs a lot of prose written, but the story itself has issues, might be good to work those out in a NaNo rush.
  • Natural Instincts — Almost no prose done, pretty much an untouched universe so lots of room to wiggle
  • Three Tequila, Floor — Lots of room to run here, very vaguely roughed out. Also bonus for being in the same ‘verse as Werewolf Sick Days (TotDU)
  • The Wolves of Windsor Dorm — Only a very loose idea, but I keep referring to it in the other TotDU stories

I have a few other stories in the wings, but I think I’ll start with these and roll out the others as needed! 🙂

Phooey on Fresh Starts!

Half-imagined Never Afters

Half-imagined Never Afters

NaNoWriMo starts in 25 days, Jeff Goins Intentional Blogging Challenge starts wednesday… and I want nothing more than to break open a fresh new set of notebooks!

I want to throw out all the old blog content and start over, redo the theme, rebuild the archives, start fresh and clean and find that impossible little pocket universe where that is a valid approach. I have almost ten years of posts here and countless stories and artwork that still haven’t made it online, I have half-finished projects that well outnumber the ones still stuck in the ‘would that be a nifty idea!’ stage.

But fresh starts are cleaner. Neater. Easier.

Well phooey on that!

I’m going to keep everything I have: the same content, the same custom theme, the same notebook and I’m not going to start from scratch.

I put a lot of work into getting where I am, it’s time to commit to what I’ve already done. This time I’m not going to knock down the building just because it needs a new coat of paint. *rolls up sleeves*

Bring it on Jeff and NaNo, I’m ready for ya!

Camp NaNoWriMo is over and I’m Happy I lost!

Camp NaNoWriMo April 2014 Words Words Words

Words Words Words

Camp NaNoWriMo April 2014 session is over… and I’ve lost Camp again. I wrote 6,236 of a 10,000 word goal (where 10,000 words = 10,000 words of published eBook), which is better than some previous attempts, but still a Loss.

I could have easily won by just dumping words on paper (and I was very tempted to at the end), but the one thing I really needed to get done was the massively overdue Saturday Story Prompts monthly eBooks.

So why aren’t I crushed at my now seemingly endless NaNo-losing streak? Why aren’t I cursing myself for not making writing a higher priority? Or vowing that Next Time(tm) I will do it better?

Because I finished (and posted) five eBooks in April, plus have a final (but not published) flash fiction to be posted in May.

Saturday Story Prompts 2012-04 and 2014-04 Saturday Story Prompts 2012-05 and 2014-05 75x100 Saturday Story Prompts 2012-06 and 2014-06 75x100 Saturday Story Prompts 2012-07 and 2014-07 75x100 Saturday Story Prompts 2012-08 and 2014-08 75x100

These are eBooks that I wouldn’t have finished if Camp NaNo hadn’t been running.

So when July comes around, I’ll happily lose again! (Only this time I’ll be losing in a traditional novel format. 😉 )

Camp NaNoWriMo eBook Release Schedule

By | March 23, 2014
Camp NaNoWriMo

Of Kingdoms and Nails

The general game-plan for April’s Camp is to release an eBook every three days: 10 books x 1,000+ words each = 10,000. Of course I also plan on exceeding that goal (if I can), so this is just the very roughest of an outline.

Since I’m trying to focus on writing/editing this month that means I have to get the cover art done in the next nine days… woo? *flails about madly*

The books that will get me to that minimum goal are as follows. I’m trying to get the SSPs done first so I can spam them into the Smashwords Store and then follow up with actual stories. Continue reading

Camp NaNoWriMo April 2014!

By | March 6, 2014
Camp NaNoWriMo

The Plotting Begins!

10,000 words is the smallest goal you can pick, so that’s where I’m starting off!

Since I have a habit of losing Camp NaNo’s with stunning consistency, I figured this time around I had better stack the deck a bit. Not only am I starting with the lowest possible goal, but I’m also working on smaller projects that I’ve already partially completed.

But the twist is that I am only going to count words that are in a new finished eBook. No drafts, no WiPs, no world-building that’s basically just filler. Continue reading

Big White Writing Binder of DOOM!

Big White Writing Binder of Drafting, err DOOM!

As part of my slightly-sooner-than-New-Year’s resolution to start finishing things, in the last few weeks I’ve gone through and printed out copies of all the shorter stories (and flash fiction) that I have in draft. The goal is to turn these all into free eBooks and post them to the website, but if I hit something that might fly for ‘real’ publication I’ll go that route as well.

Listed below is white is currently in the Big White Writing Binder of Drafting (DOOM!) and is on the list to get finished in the next few months. You’ll notice there are some sequels here where the first story in the series still isn’t done… I just grabbed the smallest ones, the older ones will be finished, just not yet! 😉

I’m hoping to post updates monthly and have this list shrink a bit… or grow as I get better at finishing things and add larger projects to the pile. *crosses fingers*
