Wooden Dolphin Magnet #005

Reflections on water or spider webbing in turquoise… the patterns were so similar I couldn’t help but play around!

This handsome gal is the result of my attempts to learn how to paint a faux version of Battle Mountain turquoise. I fell in love with the bronze and gold highlights in the rock and was trying to see if I could create a pattern that had very small chunks of the turquoise in it.

But as I painted I realised how much it looked like water… and it went from a faux attempt to fun experimentation.

Painted/Sold: Painted February 2013 and SOLD

I don’t know what it is about horses picking their own colors– but this little guy pulled the same trick Rhymer did and refused the chrome I had planned. I think he would have made a cute little tovero, but he had much simpler ideas! Continue reading

The meeting is dragging on, people are trapped in a loop rehashing old topics and you… you’re stuck doodling in the margins. Or playing Angry Birds—but I think they’d sue me if I started slapping beaks on the horses. Continue reading

Make: Breyer
Scale: Stablemate
Mold: Cantering Foal (G2)
Color: Turquoise/Teal and White
Gallery: Other Color
Medium: Acrylics
Status: Painted 200? and Sold 200?

This little guy started with a solid light teal base and was stenciled with a darker shade of teal (turquoise?) and white. He was finished off with solid black eyes, mane, tail, and hooves. He’s a glossy, which accounts for some of the bad lens flare, and much cuter in person. Continue reading

Status: Painted 200? and Sold 200?

This little gal was a custom order painted to match a color chip/card submitted buy the buyer. I think I still have the card somewhere and I’ll come back and update this when I find it. It was the first time I tried to color match something that wasn’t a photo and it was an interesting challenge! Continue reading

His name is German for ‘December Stone’ because I was completely out of ideas on what to call a turquoise horse. Babelfish is a very addicting crutch… you can make just about anything sound nifty by turning it into German (or Portuguese!) Continue reading

Mold: Saddlebred (G1)
Color: Turquoise Minimal Sabino
Gallery: Fantasy Sabino
Medium: Acrylics
Status: Painted 2005 and Sold May 2005

This little gal is a shaded turquoise, with a very minimal sabino pattern. I do like the old molds, but the ears are a pain an a half to carve out if you don’t have any epoxy to tweak them with.

This was one of the more recent horses, so the cameras caught errors that I couldn’t see when I was painting them. I’m itching to go back and correct the flaws now… arg. Continue reading

Medium: Acrylics
Status: Painted 2005 and Sold May 2005

I’m really not sure how to explain this guy. … Is it possible to use ‘you had to be there’ in regards to customizing?

My friend Jess painted his basecoat, but decided she didn’t like the color combination. I meant to strip him… really I did. But I was watching Survivor, and that got me thinking about the real Outback, which led to thoughts concerning the nifty paintings they have hanging in the restaurants. … And when I looked up from my meandering thoughts, this guy was done!
